Devonport 7th March

North to the Mainland!

It’s a cool morning, our first day in Tassie, a chill wind drifting in from the south east. It’s 7am and just light, no-one else has risen it seems, perhaps Tassie pace is more relaxed, though it is Saturday. We have decided to stay another night in Devonport, before coming here we had decided to spend at least two nights in each town so we can spend a day exploring. Not wanting to stay longer in the caravan park, Evi has found a free-camp at Horsehead Creek, next to a boat ramp about 3klm down the Mersey River. As it’s early we decide to do a drive past then hit a supermarket and look at the town.

Horsehead Creek, a bit barren but great location.

Horsehead Creek will do us just fine, and by 9:30am we have said farewell to Gary and Jenny, but swapped phone numbers, collected the van and are happily beginning our Tassie adventure with a free-camp and the rest of the day to explore. We head off southward towards Spreyton, and a cidery of the same name with a reputedly excellent range of ciders. What better way to begin our gastronomic tour of the Apple Isle than with a cider. We order a tasting board and get a couple of takeaway ciders, they are excellent, as is the bar/cafe and the orchard. https://www.spreytonciderco.com.au/

Also at Spreyton Cidery…a great beer

Next stop, Truffledore at Lower Barrington, about a 15 minute drive. This is a really charming farm-stay featuring a truffle farm, shop/cafe/vegetable garden and cooking classes. Owned by a young couple from Brisbane who were looking for a tree change and a more relaxed lifestyle. We have visited on a really quiet day and get to spend time with them chatting about their wonderful venture, something they obviously love.

Heading back into Devonport Evi searches for a late lunch venue for us and finds Pearl Oyster Bar and Cafe at the head of the Mersey River, a really relaxed indoor outdoor cafe in a parkland setting. We share a dozen oysters and a salmon dish accompanied by a Tassie Riesling.
