Bairnsdale was cold this morning and the diesel heater worked overtime till the sun finally produced enough heat! We hadn’t set a full camp so our pack-up was easy and quick. We had an 8:30am booking at the tyre place to rotate the vans wheels for even wear, and found three blokes waiting on the driveway for us as we pulled in. In and out in 15 minutes and $50.00…..on the road again.
The roads are still pretty quiet and the 50klm to Sale is a breeze and we soon sail through Sale without a stop….we have a destination to chase. Next town of Morewell is only 30klm away which is also the perfect time for a toilet break and a take-away coffee. Nice town, perhaps we’ll be back!
After Sale comes Traralgon and the start of the dual highway and easy driving to the south eastern outskirts of Melbourne, then you hit the traffic, narrow lanes, stoplights, a plethora of direction signs and yes, even more traffic (Roscoe hates traffic, narrow lanes, stoplights, a plethora of direction signs and yes, even more traffic)! We’re looking for the Five Ways Caravan Park at Dingley Village which we actually find pretty easily though a U-turn is required to get there.
Evi has negotiated with the owner to get a “special” site as we’ll be doing a 5am departure when we leave on Friday morning to catch the Spirit of Tasmania ferry, given that the park is full we wonder at this “special site”. Turns out the owner is a great bloke, very casual and accommodating, and the site is actually in an adjacent driveway of an empty house he owns, providing power and water. The catch? There’s always a catch….we need to reverse the rig back onto the main three lane road, then forward and swing across all lanes to reverse into the driveway with narrow gates (about 15cm clearance each side). Fortunately we find a break in traffic due to some traffic lights, and the owner pulls up any car that comes along. We’re in!
It seems we’re about a 40 minute drive to the Port of Melbourne and it has been advised that perhaps we should do a dry run tomorrow to acquaint ourselves with the route. It’s also an outing as the Thursday is a pretty dead day. We have been to Melbourne many times, Evi has a cold and we are both tired. Our big treat is to go shopping in a huge shopping complex that neither of us know…Roscoe loves shopping 😦
